In the pre-dawn hours of these frigid winter months it’s not uncommon to step outside and see empty cars running in driveways up and down the block.
24-year-old Nick Taylor was one of the many people who warm up their car before heading to work in the morning, but last Thursday he found something waiting for him. Taylor found a $128 civil infraction ticket for leaving his vehicle unattended, in his own driveway.
“Every person warms up their car.” the incredulous Taylor told WDIV News. “I’ve done this every day for seven years. Every person warms up their car. We live in Michigan.”
He less than kind words to share about the officer in his post on Facebook (WARNING: foul language),
Let’s all take a moment to thank officer dipshit K. Keary for wasting the taxpayer’s money and giving me a ticket for warming up my car in my own damn driveway.
According to WDIV, Nick started his car and went back inside for approximately 5 minutes before returning to find the ticket. He couldn’t believe the officer hadn’t even bothered to knock on his door. “That would have been respectful,” Taylor said. “I had no clue that this was a law, an ordinance.”
While ignorance of the law is no excuse, Nick is one of the countless Michigan citizens that have no idea they’re breaking the law every morning.
Police Chief James Berlin explained the reason for the law. Leaving the car running unattended makes it incredibly easy to steal. “You’re putting the public at risk. This is purely a public safety issue.”
