At first glance you’d never know that 21-year-old Semantha Bunce, a young mother, is a trained combat medic, but a pair of home intruders learned this the hard way.
Bunce was feeding her infant son when the armed intruders kicked in the front door of her home in Charlotte, North Carolina. She set down her son and took control of the fight meeting the assailants at her bedroom door.
The men opened fire and she immediately returned fire, driving the men down the stairwell toward the front of the house. During the shoot out, Bunce took two shots to the abdomen, but her training kept her calm enough to finish the job. Once the intruders had left, she crawled up the stairs to check on her son then tended to her wounds long before an ambulance arrived at the scene.
Her community has rallied around her family following the shooting providing thoughts, prayers, and support as she recovers from the ordeal. Her husband attributes her training and mental stability to her survival and fears what would have happened had she not known how to protect herself.
Bunce requires at least one more surgery to treat her injuries. So far no arrests have been made, but the police are still investigating. A crowdfuding page has been setup on gofundme.com to help support the family during Semantha’s recovery.
After Semantha’s story went viral, one suspect turned himself over to authorities. Reco Latur Dawkins Jr., 23, was charged with multiple felonies including attempted murder and breaking and entering. Judges set his bond at $1 million. According to WSOCTV, this isn’t Dawkins’ first run-in with the law. He was previously convicted of two other break-ins and charged with breaking and entering at least three times in 2014 that were dismissed.
