Minka Disbrow was 16-years-old in 1928 when she and a friend were out for a picnic together. The pair of teenagers were approached by three strange men who attacked and raped Minka. She kept the assault a secret from even her family, until her belly started to grow.
Sexual education wasn’t commonly taught in schools in the 1920s, and 16-year-old Minka didn’t understand what was happening until she came to her mother explained why her body was chaning.
Afraid of scandal and wanting to preserve Minka’s reputation, the family kept her pregnancy a secret. She gave birth to a baby girl named Betty Jane, who was immediately placed for adoption.
Minka spent decades searching for her lost daughter, until 77 years later a judge finally opened the sealed records at the request of Betty Jane herself.
