Cottonmouths, also known as Water Moccasins, are venomous pit-vipers found throughout the southeast United States usually along the Coastal Plain. Despite common misconception, Cottonmouths are not always all black. They can be solid brown, black, or marked with dark bands against a brownish yellow color. They often live near freshwater wetlands feeding on fish and amphibians.
While taking a water sample in Virginia, a team from National Geographic encountered one of these vipers in the water. The snake wasn’t too pleased at their presence and lunged for the camera multiple times.
