Tasmanian devils are marsupials and can only be found on the island of Tasmania, though they used to be native to Australia.
In 2008, Tasmania devils were declared endangered. Their drop in population can be traced back to the late 1990’s when a disease, Devil facial tumor disease(DFTD), reduced their species. DFTD is an aggressive non-viral transmissible parasitic cancer that affects Tasmanian devils.
To reduce the impact of DFTD, programs have been started to build up a group of healthy devils in captivity, completely isolated from the fatal disease.
