Thousands of lives were shattered after a powerful earthquake struck the border of Turkey and Syria. Despite the chaos and destruction, tales of hope emerged.
Seven-year-old Mariam and her younger brother Ilaaf found themselves trapped under the weight of rubble when their home collapsed. Little Mariam instinctively shielded her brother, saving his life and providing some safety throughout their harrowing ordeal.
For over 36 horrifying hours, Mariam held her brother close with her arm protecting his head. She stayed strong and comforted her brother in the face of complete darkness and claustrophobic terror.
Rescue teams and first responders worked tirelessly to locate survivors in the shattered town of Haram. After more than a day and a half, they unearthed Mariam and Ilaaf. Mariam caressed her brother’s hair as she looked up and spoke with her rescuers.
In a heart-wrenching moment, Mariam said she would do anything in exchange for their help. She even offered to be their servant if they would save her brother’s life.
Shocked by the little girl’s words, the rescuers reassured her that everyone would be safe and that no one needed to make any deals.
