A funeral fundraiser for notorious murder-cult leader Charles Manson has been permanently removed by the crowdfunding site GoFundMe.
The page was created by a man named John Michael Jones who says he was raising the money for Jason Freeman, a Florida man who claims to be Manson’s grandson.
“It breaks my heart to see Jason [Mason’s grandson] now suffering from the same prejudices, hate, discrimination and deliberate lies that his grandfather endured for 48 years,” Jones wrote on social media after GoFundMe shut down his fundraiser.
The page had raised $972 before it was canceled.
“We removed this content earlier today and refunded donors,” a GoFundMe representative told TMZ.
Manson formed a quasi-cult commune in the late 1960s that would later become known as the “Manson Family.” He was convicted of orchestrating a bloody two-night rampage in the summer of 1969 leaving seven dead, most notably actress Sharon Tate who was 8 1/2 months pregnant.
He was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to death in 1971. California later ruled the death penalty unconstitutional in 1972 and Manson’s sentence was modified to life in 1977.
Manson died from natural causes on November 15, 2017. His unclaimed body was cremated, but Jason Freeman stated his intent to collect Manson’s remains and possessions.
