A little girl is home safe today because two men paid attention to an amber alert and had the courage to stop a kidnapper. 3-year-old Ava Byrne from Pennsylvania was found in New York after the heroic good Samaritans recognized the kidnapper’s license plate. They quickly flagged down a traffic officer, Md Ali, before the kidnapper knew what was happening. The kidnapper was revealed to be Ava’s father Robert Byrne, who suffers from mental illness. Debbie Cyr, Ava’s grandmother, told CBS about Robert, “he just hears voices, he listens to what the voices tell him to do.” Police officers escorted Ava and Robert to the hospital where doctors confirmed the little girl was unharmed. The officers played with Ava and kept her happily entertained while her mother, Morgan Barela, made the long drive to New York. Robert, 34, is now in police custody. The officers involved say this is the most successful amber alert they’ve ever seen.
