Brady Lowry and wrestling teammates from Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming were searching for deer antler sheds when their lives changed forever.
On the way back to their car, Brady noticed what appeared to be bear signs on the ground. Sure enough, a Grizzly bear appeared just moments later. The bear attacked Brady knocking the young man off a small ledge about 5 feet above the ground.
“It started chomping on me pretty good. It got a hold of my left arm, it was shaking me around, broke my left arm,” Brady said in an interview.
Kendall Cummings, Brady’s friend and fellow wrestler, started yelling and throwing whatever he could find to distract the bear but it was no use. Seeing his friend in trouble, Kendall was out of options and decided to take the offensive and attack the bear himself in order to save his friend.
“He jumped down and grabbed the bear … and yanked it off me,” Brady said about Kendall’s act of selfless bravery.
His plan worked and the bear backed off momentarily. As Kendall was tending to Brady the Grizzly returned. It bit into Kendall’s face and arm before finally abandoning the group of wrestlers. The friends were finally able to regroup call for help.
The young men were taken to a hospital in Billings, Montana and treated for their injuries.
“We become best friends going to hell and back with each other. Seeing someone sweat and bleed … coach teaches us that. You aren’t going to leave a brother behind,” Brady explained.
