Don Williams, a country legend, has died today at the age of 78. His representative released a statement saying he had a short battle with an undisclosed illness and passed away earlier today.
Williams grew up in Portland, Texas and was a resident of the Lone Start State for most of his life.
His song “I Believe in You” released in 1980 helped propel him to the top of the charts and endeared himself to fans across the world.
Williams was accepted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and there’s been an outpouring of support for the Country music legend.
His smooth baritone voice earned him the nickname “Gentle Giant.” It was a nickname that suited him well.
He even appeared as himself in the film “Smokey and the Bandit II.”
In March 2016, he announced his retirement saying, “It’s time to hang my hat up and enjoy some quiet time at home. I’m so thankful for my fans, my friends and my family for their everlasting love and support.”
