Rich and Suzanne Gilson of South Jersey stumbled upon a small, hidden treasure while excavating their front lawn. While digging with a shovel, Rich hit some glass followed quickly by a hard lump. He initially thought it was a root ball, but upon closer inspection he realized it was actually two bundles of burlap that had been stored in a glass jar.
Each bundle was wrapped around a fat wad of $10 and $20 bills dated from the 1930s. The two bundles held a grand total of $1,000, which during the Great Depression would have been the equivalent of $40,000 in today’s economy.
The Gilson family later learned that the money originally belonged to their home’s former owner, James Dempsey. Dempsey had hidden the stash during the Great Depression as a rainy day fund. Sadly, his family forgot where he buried it and could never find it again!
