Parents who grew up as part of Generation X are having a tough time relating their childhood to their own children. Gen X-ers didn’t grow up with the internet or cell phones but are now raising children who have never known life without them. That difference alone is enough to make a 1980s childhood feel like it took place on another planet, but there are many more differences that are easily overlooked.
Try explaining to a child today that there were smoking sections in restaurants and aircraft, as well as ashtrays all over the place. Most kids today are shocked, as they should be!
The fact that we went places with our buddies without knowing how to contact our parents quickly? Unheard of to most kids today.
Did you ever listen to the radio, waiting for your favorite song to come on so you could record it on a tape recorder? Were you irritated when the DJ would chat through the song’s prelude until the lyrics began? Try explaining that to your Spotify-obsessed children!
One dad did just that with a video for his kids about his 1980s experiences. It’s like stepping into a time machine since Justin H (who goes by @shadyraro on TikTok) added photographs and descriptions of stuff that all ’80s youngsters will recognize.
