Kevin Scheunemann owns a Dairy Queen restaurant in Kewaskum, Wisconsin. He’s making headlines this week after he decided to defend a sign posted on his establishment’s front door,
The sign proclaims that the restaurant is decidedly “Politically Incorrect” and warns potential patrons that they may hear phrases like “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Easter,” and “God Bless America.”
It continues to warn customers that the staff may offer free sundaes to veterans, salute the flag, and give thanks to troops, police officers, and firefighters. “It just seems that those kinds of values and principles are becoming controversial in society,” Scheunemann said to local CBS affiliate WDJT 58. The sign advises any offended customers to contact the owner who will arrange a designated “snowflake safe space.”
Scheunemann posted the sign four years ago after a customer complained about hearing Christian music in the restaurant. According to Scheunemann, there haven’t been any similar complaints since the sign was posted.
“He posted it on the door so you see it before you walk in,” said local bar owner April Serwe. “You don’t have to walk in if you don’t agree with it.”
An offended customer took a photograph of the sign and shared it on Facebook. She later deleted the post after receiving multiple “cruel and threatening” comments. Chris Cervantez shared the image again on Facebook with a message encouraging everyone to be civil while sharing their opinions. “Calling Ashley names such as idiot, psycho, bitch, etc. doesn’t seem very Christian to me,” he wrote,
Corporate officials at Dairy Queen made the following press release statement after Scheunemann’s sign went viral,
American Dairy Queen Corporation does not encourage our independently owned and operated franchisees to post non-business related messages in their locations or on their external reader boards. This sign expresses the views of this independent owner only and does not speak for ADQ Corporation or any of our other independent franchise owners. We expect our franchisees and employees to treat every person who walks through our doors with the utmost dignity and respect. Nothing less is acceptable.
Scheunemann says he’d be happy to have a conversation with anyone who “feels uncomfortable” after reading his sign.
