When his 3-year-old daughter Kaylieann wanted to dress up like Superman for her class picture, Austin Steinbach couldn’t think of any reason to say no.
“I’ve always wanted her to be as independent as possible,” he told a Fox News affiliate. “I love her wearing these,” he continued.
Kaylieann carried a large action figure of Superman, or “Pooterman” as she calls him, for the photo as her sidekick.
Shortly after the photo was released, Kaylieann’s story went viral, and her parents were stunned. Kaylieann’s parents see their little girl as a superhero, but they didn’t expect the rest of the deaf community to do the same. What few people knew was that little Kaylieann is 75% deaf in both ears, and her smiling face and determined personality has inspired a community.
“I’m still astonished by it. I still can’t believe what’s happening,” said her mother Jami Steinbach. “Being deaf isn’t necessarily a disability that you’re still able to go out there and be yourself, be creative,” she continued.
