Doris Day’s passion proves she’s still America’s Sweetheart at the age of 95

Doris Day, the Hollywood icon, is most well known for her classic films Pillow Talk, Calamity jane, The Pajama Game, and Move Over Darling. She hasn’t been active in the film industry since 1973. She left her lavish home in Beverly Hills and moved to Carmel Valley, California where she made her final film Julie. During that time, Day gave her new home an incredible make-over specifically to follow her passion, rescuing animals.

Day has always loved animals, says her manager and close friend Bob Bashara. She was nicknamed “the dog catcher of Beverly Hills” even before she left the glamorous Hollywood lifestyle. Day was known to ride a bicycle through the city looking for strays. If she couldn’t find a home for the lost pups, she’d take them home and clean them up.

After her third husband, Martin Melcher, passed away in 1968, Day turned animal rescue from a part-time hobby into a full-time job. In 1978 she founded the Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF), a non-profit organization dedicated to helping lost, stray, or abandoned animals find a happy home. Since then the DDAF has helped thousands of dogs, cats, horses, birds, and more animals have a second chance at life.

Even now at the age of 95 Day continues to stay busy with both the DDAF and the Doris Day Animal League.
