Shiloh Pepin was born with sirenomelia, one of the rarest deformities known to mankind. She lacked a lower colon, genital organs, and has only one functioning kidney. Her legs were fused from the waist down, like a mermaid tail, giving rise to the condition’s nickname “mermaid syndrome.”
Doctors told Shiloh’s parents she would only live for about 10 days after birth, but the tough little girl defied all odds from the start.
Most other survivors of sirenomelia have their legs surgically separated, but that wasn’t an option for Shiloh because the blood vessels in her circulatory system would have been severed.
Sadly, Shiloh passed away at the age of 10-years-old, but her story lives on as a source of inspiration for others. The little girl with a “shining personality,” had achieved worldwide fame by the time she was in fifth grade. Her story was told on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and in a TLC documentary, and she inspired many people in the medical field and beyond.
