A heroic school bus driver for Glenarden Woods Elementary School in Prince Georges’s County, Washington saved the lives of 20 children after the vehicle burst into flames. Reneita Smith attempted to stop the fire, but it quickly grew out of control. “This fire was going too fast. I had a little extinguisher,” she told CBS News in Washington. “It was too late. I couldn’t do anything.”
Neighbors rushed out to help and escorted the children into a backyard until another bus could arrive. People quickly called Smith a hero, but she humbly brushed off their praise saying, “As I’m driving that bus, they’re my babies. I’m their mom until I drop them off to their biological moms.”
