Gregory Scott Schriner and his friend were driving and noticed a hawk on the side of the road.
The hawk, which they think is a female, seemed as if she needed help. Gregory said, “I saw a hawk fly across the road in front of me. I noticed she was covered in chollas and wasn’t flying very well.”
Chollas is a type of cactus found in North American deserts. The barbed spines of cholla are known to attach to skin, fur, and clothing. Let’s just say, they’re painful.
The guys knew how much pain the hawk could’ve been in, so they decided to help. Gregory carefully picked up the hawk from the side of the road with a jacket and placed her on the seat of his vehicle. Then he began, one by one, removing the barbed spines with a knife. They were in the hawk’s face, wings and even her mouth.
What’s probably the most surprising to viewers is how calm the hawk is during the entire process. You can hear Gregory’s friend saying in the video, “I can’t believe how it’s just sitting there letting you do that.”
Gregory removes as many barbed spines as he can before setting the hawk free.
