You’ve gotta hand it to Kermit the Frog. He can play a mean banjo for an amphibian. Hey, we also have to hand it to Steve Martin. He can play really well himself.
Banjo is an instrument that goes way back in music and in the United States in particular, it has a deeply rooted history in the South, and this is probably the most well-known banjo rock off. “Dueling Banjos” displays a musicians prowess on the instrument.
The song was featured in the 1972 film “Deliverance” and most people recognize it right away. It earned a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 after the movie’s release.
Kermit himself is responsible for another famous banjo tune, “It Ain’t Easy Being Green.” So we know he knows his way around those five strings.
Steve Martin has been playing banjo since he was 17 years old, who would have thunk that? He says he used to slow a record down to half speed and tune his banjo down so he could perfectly follow along while practicing. He even had a banjo for the early performances of his comedy song “King Tut.”
So who comes out on top after this duel? We’d say the audience because it sure is fun to watch! But you can decide for yourself.
