Legendary film icon Kirk Douglas turned 101-years-old earlier this week. Douglas epitomizes the American Dream in true rags-to-riches fashion. Born to impoverished immigrants in 1916, Dougalas became a box office star in the golden age of cinema. From the late 1040 through the 1960s audiences packed movie theaters to see his string of now classic films. At the age of 90 he received an honorary Oscar for his incredible body of work.
His equally famous children joined him for a special birthday surprise.
Michael, the most well known of Kirk’s four sons, shared photos of the party on Facebook.
Kirk posed with his two oldest sons, Michael, 73, and Joel, 70.
A pair of special cakes were baked for Kirk honoring two of his most famous roles.
A sunflower cake bearing the inscription “101” was decorated to look like a painting by Vincent van Gogh. Kirk portrayed the troubled artist in the 1956 classic Lust for Life.
The second cake featured a pair of boxing gloves with the inscription “Happy birthday to the champion.” It also included a photograph of Kirk from his first Acadamey Award nominated performance in the 1949 film Champion.
Kirk was also joined by his wife Anne, and granddaughter Kelsey as he blew out the candle.
Michael’s wife and fellow Hollywood star Catherine Zeta-Jones didn’t appear in any of the photos from the party, but she later shared a tribute to Kirk on Instagram.
“Happy Birthday to my wonderful, inspirational and loving father in law, Kirk,” she wrote. “Love you with all my heart. #hero”
Michael and Catherine’s son Dylan also shared a message for “Pappy.”
“Happy birthday 101 years and still sexy love you with all my heart Pappy,” the 17-year-old wrote about his grandfather on Instagram.
