Another classic TV moment from “I Love Lucy.” Lucile Ball is one of those iconic faces you just can’t forget but you might not remember this special television moment.
On this episode of “I Love Lucy” from 1952, Ball wanted to find a way of announcing her pregnancy to Ricky on air. The problem was that the network’s board of standards and practices, the censors, wouldn’t let her use the word “pregnant.” This is despite the fact that Ball was five months pregnant at the time and it was clear to women everywhere.
Desi Arnaz knew that she was pregnant of course. Although, he had only been told recently! It’s his wife. But the character of Lucy had to break the news to the character of Ricky. So she sends a note to the bandleader and they cleverly perform “We’re Having a Baby” to give Ricky the hint.
