Howard Kirby enjoys shopping at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Owosso, Michigan for used stuff.
Howard went to the ReStore shop in December 2019 to get some furnishings for his man cave. He ended up spending $70 on a used couch and ottoman.
The matching ottoman felt “strange” and particularly unpleasant in compared to the sofa for the next two weeks, according to Howard.
So he and his daughter-in-law unzipped one of the pillows, and that’s when they discovered something incredible.
Digging inside the fabric, they extracted a lock box from the cushion, which contained seemingly limitless piles of cash.
Howard eventually discovered $43,170 buried inside the ottoman cushion!
After the initial shock subsided, he decided he might put this unexpected windfall to good use by replacing his leaking roof.
But, before spending the money, Howard contacted the secondhand store to find out who had originally given the couch. That’s when the story takes an unexpected turn.
