Rodney Smith Jr. and his friend Terrence Stroy made headlines after they saw Smith’s 93-year-old neighbor struggling to mow her lawn.
Smith wrote about what happened next on Facebook,
We did this sweet lady’s lawn today. She is 93, the neighbors told us that she been out their trying to cut her own lawn ?. Have no fear, raising men lawn care is going to make sure her lawn is done every two weeks ! Making a difference in our community !
Smith and Stroy are full time college students, but they believe making a difference in their community is a priority. The two noticed a need for basic lawn maintenance among the community of senior citizens in Alabama and decided to volunteer their services.
Together the pair have created a buisness that provides free landscaping services to senior citizens who physically or economically incapable of maintaining their property. Knowing that seniors were easy targets for scam artists providing a similar service. Smith and Stroy decided to do everything for free. “I thought I needed to do something about it. That’s when I decided to cut lawns for the elderly, disabled and single mothers for free,” said Smith.
Together the pair of students have created a new charity, Raising Men Lawn Care Service. The goal of their charity goes well beyond lawn service and provides a sense of accomplishment and community among young men and women charged with helping care for their elders or those who cannot care for themselves. Their mission statement describes the program as “the union of an ordinary yard maintenance service and the commitment to establish an inspiring program to keep our young men and boys (young women and girls) on a positive path while learning and understanding their value in society.”
