The map below shows the top private employer in every state using data collected by 24/7 Wall Street. This map does not include any public administrative employers such as city, state, or federal governments.
Universities are not 100% funded by the government, which is why they are included in this list. While a portion of their income comes from state subsidies, most large State Universities make the vast majority of their income from tuition, research grants, contracts, endowments and university name licensing. Notice how much more a t-shirt or coffee mug costs if it has a NCAA team on it? Commercial licencing is a big part of university revenue.
Unbelievably, the map appears to be dominated by a single private entity.
