When Richard and Nola Davis brought home Patch as a puppy, their two children Andrew and Clara were absolutely delighted. As the Patch started to grow, Richard and Nola were worried they had made a mistake. Their house was small and their backyard was tiny. They were concerned that Patch didn’t have enough space, so they considered finding him a new home. The children were crushed and desperately protested the potential loss of their beloved pet.
The parents agreed to not make any sudden decisions, but later that night fate would make the choice for them. It was the Davis’ wedding anniversary and Nola had a few hours to herself while her husband and children were out of the house. She turned up the radio and settled into a relaxing bath. Surrounded by warm water and pleasant music, Nola closed her eyes but was startled awake when she felt Patch’s jaws close around her wrist.
Patch hated to take baths and was terrified of the bathroom, so Nola was concerned when he continued to tug on her bare arm with alarming intensity. She climbed out of the tub and pulled on a robe to see what had him so upset. When she opened the door Nola found her home completely engulfed in flame.
A sudden rush of fresh oxygen from the bathroom sent the flames blazing toward Nola and Patch. Struggling to see through the fire and smoke, Nola let Patch lead her to safety with no time to lose.
