Dianne Hoffmeyer’s ears were burning when she overheard a pair of cruel strangers swapping insults about her looks. She was standing in line waiting for a cup of coffee at Tim Horton’s when a pair of women in their 40s started mocking her.
They called her a whale, not knowing she had just lost 177 lbs, and made fun of her hair calling it ‘nasty’ since her roots were visible. “I instantly started to cry, because it hurts,” she told ABC 7 NEWS. “I don’t know the women. I don’t know why they would choose to say something like that.” She wanted to get even, but did something incredibly surprising instead.
Willing the tears in her eyes not to fall down her cheeks, Hoffmeyer asked the cashier if she could pay the bill for the two women behind her. The cashier had overheard everything too and was utterly shocked by Hoffmeyer’s noble response. The bullies were left with their mouths hanging open as Hoffmeyer silently walked past them, climbed into her car, and cried for 15 minutes.
After she calmed down, Dianne shared her story on Facebook where it quickly went viral.
When asked why she took the high road, Hoffmeyer told reporters that she wanted to set a good example for her daughter.
