Ryan Read, a registered nurse, was enjoying some well deserved rest in front of the TV watching one of her favorite programs, Flip or Flop on HGTV. She thought she saw something odd she’d never seen before, a dark patch on the host’s neck. She got closer to the TV and her fear started to grow, it was a cancerous lump.
She wanted to get word to the host, Tarek El Moussa, but she didn’t want her warning to come off as the raving of some crazed fan. Read kept her head and contacted the production studio by email and explained the danger as calmly as she could.
Luckily for El Moussa, the producers read her email and acted on her concern. Upon learning of the deadly growth, El Moussa immediately consulted a doctor. A quick check confirmed the worst, it was cancer.
A one-hour surgery was planned and performed as soon as possible, but there were some complications. One hour soon became four and the doctors were eventually able to excise all of the cancer by removing his entire thyroid, but discovered something worse, the cancer had entered El Moussa’s lymph nodes. Doctors started a drastic radiation treatment involving active iodine isotopes so strong that El Moussa had to be separated from his family for days.
A week later (after the video shown below), his family was overjoyed to learn that cancer had been eradicated and he could return to a normal life out of the hospital. There is still fear that the cancer may return, and El Moussa will undergo further tests to monitor his condition. At the moment though, he and his family owe all their future happiness to a singe nurse with an observant eye and the thoughtfulness to share her concern.
