Lt. Jason Short responded to a call from a concerned citizen reporting a baby trapped in a hot car parked outside of a shopping center in Keene, New Hampshire.
He saw an infant sleeping in a car seat and shattered one of the vehicle’s windows without hesitation. Lt. Short checked for a pulse, but the infant was unresponsive. When he began administering CPR he realized something didn’t feel right. The baby was made of plastic.
The car’s owner arrived a few minutes later and was absolutely furious to find her window shattered. The “infant” was actually an incredibly realistic replica known as a reborn doll. These authentic baby dolls cost thousands of dollars and are favored by a niche group of doll collectors.
Ainslie, this particular doll, cost the owner $2,300 and looks incredibly realistic.
Lt. Short’s department was forced to repay the owner for damages to her vehicle. Now police departments across the country are asking owners of these dolls not to leave them uncovered in a locked car to prevent further incidents.
