Fire Department Teaches Driver Expensive Lesson About Parking In Front Of Hydrants

The City of Merced Fire Department in California recently made waves on social media after it put out a fire, but mainly because of the way they used their hose.

A driver blocked the nearest hydrant, and with lives potentially at risk, they had no problem shattering two windows in the vehicle and running the hose through it.

This technique is known as “hosing” and it’s completely legal.

Why don’t the fire fighters just go around the car? Simple, these high pressure hoses need to be kept as straight as possible. Any kinks or sharp bends could reduce the water flow rate by half or more, which could be disastrous during an emergency.
