French firefighters struggle to control the blaze as flames engulf the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
The cause of the fire and extent of the damage are still unknown.

Citizens and tourists gathered around in shock as firefighters fought the flames today.
“Notre Dame, Paris, is on fire and it feels like the end of the world,” Shiv Malik wrote on Twitter.

According to Global News, firefighters report that the fire could be “linked to planned maintenance and restoration of the building,” but have not yet determined the cause.

The BBC reports Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has described it as a “terrible fire” and encourages onlookers to stay back and let the firemen do their job.
