What is that weird pod? It’s a shark’s egg!
In the video below a feisty little bamboo shark is released from its pod, with a little help.
The bamboo shark is born from a tough egg case that doesn’t always open when it is supposed to. Its not unusual for these eggs to be opened manually to save the baby.
Watch as the man carefully squeezes the tiny shark towards the back of the case as he cuts through the tough brown membrane. With a little work the case is finally open and the excited shark is finally free.
It’s hard to believe how large the stripped shark is compared to the pod, and the shark is clearly happy to be free as it immediately begins swimming.
Native to the Indo-West Pacific between Japan and Australia, the bamboo shark may grow up to more than 3 feet (1 meter) in length as it matures.
