Phil McNamara was on a boat when Mount Tavurvur erupted back in 2014.
He captured the moment the volcano “popped its top” with a video camera.
The natural explosion was impressive enough, but the shockwave that followed surprised everyone on the boat.
Boaters were far enough away to see the shockwave disturb the shore, water, and even the clouds in the sky.
“Watch out for the shock, it’s coming,” warns one passenger. The camera shakes and the sound of a natural cannon can be heard when the wave finally reaches the boat.
