Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

With all medications, there are side effects and not everyone suffers from the same ones.

Ibuprofen doesn’t require a prescription and is one of the most commonly used drugs in the United States. However, there’s been evidence that NSAIDs aren’t as harmless as once thought.

NSAIDs are considered “safe” when they’re taken as directed, but more and more people are relying on them for long-term use.

In a study published in the journal BMJ, researchers found that some risks can appear after even a few days of using NSAIDs. Compared with people who didn’t take the painkillers, those who did had a 20% to 50% greater chance of having a heart attack. The risk is greater for those with existing heart conditions.
