Son turns home into aquarium to bring back memories for mom with dementia

Despite the pandemic, an Australian guy named Jason van Genderen wanted to give his cherished mother the finest Mother’s Day possible.

His mother Hendrika suffers from both Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. As a result, she has trouble remembering things and some of her fondest memories continue to slip away.

On Mother’s Day, Jason wanted to help her relive some memories with an impressive display.

Throughout his childhood, Jason’s parents would take him to the Sydney Aquarium. The trip became an annual tradition and Jason was certain it would help his mom rekindle some old memories. But during the pandemic the aquarium was closed. Unable to take his mom to the aquarium, Jason found a way to bring the aquarium to her.

Jason and his family coated his home’s windows with baking paper and set up two projectors to beam images of marine life onto the glass.

The results are unbelievable. Watch the video below to see Hendrika’s reaction to her son’s beautiful gesture.
