A school in Pennsylvania is being roasted after a photo of a student’s disgusting lunch went viral. The bubbly brown mass of congealed fat that was supposed to be a hamburger has been turning stomachs across the country after this image was posted to Facebook. According to the Daily Mail, concerned viewers filled the comment section with concerns for the students’ safety.
A cafeteria worker from another school wrote to WJAC in response to the image, If that burger had come out of my oven looking like that it would have went in the garbage…not on your child’s meal!”
After the story went viral, the school board finally removed the meal from the lunch menu. Dr. Luke Lansberry, superintendent of DuBois Area School District, said:
“Our food service director has contacted the state and told them about the situation and made it clear we will no longer accept that product in the district, just to make sure that we have good-quality food. It’s something we’ll learn from and overcome and I have 100 percent confidence in the food service staff here that work hard to make great food for all of us.
Food service workers cooked the hamburgers at 170 degrees, when typically they are only required to cook at 155 degrees. There’s a pretty good chance that hamburger was overcooked and a lot of the internal ingredients surfaced from that level of heat.
Dr. Lansberry insisted that the burger was safe to eat and had been served no less than 300 times before the first complaint according to WJAC News. After reading his defense of the meal one Facebook user wrote to WJAC saying “I would have liked to see the Superintendent eat that Burger since he was so confident it was an overcooking issue.”
