It sounds like the story from a family movie, but it actually happened in real life.
Five 13-year-old boys rallied together to defend James Willmert, their classmate with special needs, from constant bullying. Jack, Jake, Gus, Landon, and Tyler saw James being teased on the playground and they decided enough was enough.
“They were like, using him and taking advantage of him,” Jack told USA today. “Because he is easier to pick on, and it is not right.” The five best friends decided their group had room for one more and that no one bullies their friends.
Once they became his friends they learned the many tragic losses he had suffered in his young life, and they became the family this boy both needed and deserved. Adopted while he was still an infant, James lost his adoptive father when he was only 6-years-old.
James never really had friends before, but now he and his five best friends are inseparable. “He didn’t want to go out to recess. It would be a struggle but now he can barely eat his lunch to get outside to play with those guys,” said James’ mother.
