Bryant Collins, a car mechanic from Georgia, became a hero when he rescued an infant crawling along the side of a busy highway. While traveling along highway 72 in Madison County, Georgia, Collins saw a strange shape moving along the roadside.
In an interview with HLN, Collins said “I didn’t think it could even be a baby at first, how could it be a baby out here in the middle of nowhere? But at the same time that I’m thinking that, my foot is mashing the brakes.”
Acting on instinct, Collins pulled over, picked up the baby girl, and called 911. He waited for nearly 2 hours before help arrived and played gospel music to help make the little girl more comfortable. Collins assumed the infant must have fallen down the nearby embankment and crawled to the highway.
Shortly after police arrived, the girl’s father and mother appeared. Timothy Pickens was arrested and charged with cruelty to children, reckless conduct, and obstruction. The girl’s mother told the police that she had asked her three older children to watch the baby before she disappeared.
The child was placed back in the mothers care at the discretion of the Division of Family and Children Services to receive medical attention for some minor scrapes and bruises. Authorities believe it is more than likely that the mother will also face charges.
