Flavaine Carvalho was working her shift at Mrs. Potato, a restaurant in Orlando, when she observed something strange at one of her tables.
Everyone in the family was eating, except for an 11-year-old boy, who received no food at all.
The server seemed perplexed and asked the family if the food was good, pointing to the boy’s empty plate. Instead of eating with the family at the restaurant, the stepfather indicated his stepson would eat dinner at home. She could have stopped there, but one look at the boy convinced her that there was a lot more going on.
Flavaine, a single mother with a teen daughter, noticed the bruises and scrapes on the boy’s face and arms. She felt there was something wrong right then and there, and she needed to act swiftly.
She stood behind his parents, using her motherly instincts and fast thinking, and held up a handwritten note so they couldn’t see what she was doing.
“Do you need help?” the note asked.
“Yes,” the boy quietly gestured.
That’s when Flavaine called 911.
The horrific truth was revealed only after doctors visited with the boy. And if this brave waitress had not followed her intuition, the story may have ended very differently. In fact, authorities suggested it was possible that the probe would lead to a killing.
