Getting a $450 tip doesn’t happen every day when you work at a small cafe. So Rosalynd Harris was overwhelmed when she got one at her job in Washington, DC after a man who was wearing a cowboy hat left her a note along with the generous tip.
Jason White, a dentist from Texas, was in town for Trump’s inauguration and he stopped in at a restaurant called Busboys and Poets before hopping on a flight back home.
Apparently, the restaurant is known for its political artwork which dons the walls and for being a favorite spot among activists. White later said to reporters that he was worried they might not be welcome because one of his friends was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat. “We started getting looks. I told my friend, you need to take your hat off. I don’t want people to think we’re coming in here to flaunt our Trump stuff. We’re just coming here to have lunch.”
But Harris, the waitress, approached them with a big smile. White says, “She started laughing when we said we were from West Texas and she said, ‘I can tell you’re from the South,’ We interacted like regular human beings, not white, not black, not Trump supporter, not black waitress.”

Harris left a message on the receipt and a hefty tip. The note said in part, “We may come from different cultures and may disagree on certain issues, but if everyone would share their smile and kindness like you… our country will come together as one people.”
