There has been a new room discovered in San Jose’s Winchester Mystery House.
The former home of Sarah Winchester is a Victorian Mansion that’s said to be haunted. The newly discovered room is an attic space that’s been boarded up for nearly a hundred years.
Winchester was the widow of gun-seller William Wirt Winchester and she was heir to the Winchester fortune. The home’s preservation is a public project and the house is a landmark in California.
The house itself is a huge mansion boasting about 10,000 windows, 47 fireplaces, 13 bathrooms, and nine kitchens. There are a number of oddities in the house like a staircase that descends before ascending and there are secret passageways hidden throughout.
The family and house are both wrapped up in mystery. Sarah Winchester was born in 1840 and married William Winchester when she was 22. The family lost their child to a mysterious illness known as “marasmus.”
The sudden tragedy sent Sarah down a spiral of grief and stress. She ended up turning to spiritualists. She was convinced that those killed by Winchester rifles were haunting her family.
Sarah moved west and build a giant mansion which was supposed to be big enough to house all the spirits which haunted her. She spent the rest of her life trying to build this house.
While Sarah Winchester was a very eccentric person, she also was very generous to her employees and local charities and orphanages. She regularly gave away a lot of her income to these people and organizations.
She eventually passed away in 1922 of heart failure. Her mansion is still making people scratch their heads.
