A staff member at a Sanibel Island day care facility in Florida was terminated after leaving a note on a baby’s stomach with black permanent marker. The cruel note read “Mom I’m out of diapers pls read my report.”
The employee believed that leaving the mother with this message would be a good way to remind her to pack more diapers for the daycare. Why they chose such a heartless and distainful delivery system instead of say, a paper note, we may never know. As you could have predicted, the mother was more than a little upset.
Heather Chisum, the mother, was beyond shocked when she found the note scrawled on her son’s belly. She scrubbed and scrubbed with baby wipes, but couldn’t fully remove the ink from little Milo’s skin.
Not knowing where else to turn, Heather shared the story on Facebook and asked for advice about how to handle the situation.
“I really need your opinions guys, because I’m about to barge in this daycare tomorrow morning and have some words,” she wrote in her post.
The story quickly went viral and Sanibel Island day care released a statement shortly thereafter.
“We are aware of the incident at the school, and we are terribly sorry for the distress it has caused the family involved as well as all of our families. It was a breach of our professional ethics on the part of the teacher,” wrote Cindy Carter DeCosta, director of Children’s Education Center of the Islands. “The school has taken immediate action to remove the teacher from the school. We are reviewing protocols already in place to ensure that nothing like this occurs again.”
