Charles and Lisa Shaw saw an incredible opportunity over 25 years ago, and it changed their family’s life forever.
Back in 1996, Charles and Lisa purchased an abandoned junior high school located in Durango, Colorado. The building was completely vacant and in terrible condition. On the plus side, the 45,000-square-foot structure was solid brick and had incredible potential to become something amazing – a mixed-use space that could be the heart of a thriving community.
After many years of hard work, the Shaw’s dream has come true and the building itself has become a marvel of innovation and sustainability. They now live in what is affectionately known as the “Smiley Building” with their young son along with several other artists and non-profit businesses.
