Two Target employees are being recognized by the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office for being good samaritans thanks to their common sense and the fact that they decided to do something.
A couple of seniors came into their local Target to buy $4,000 in gift cards and the employees, thinking it was weird to buy that much, decided to actually do something.
The employees asked the couple why they would buy so much worth of gift cards and they were informed that it was to help get a family member out of jail. Well, jail doesn’t work that way. When have you ever heard of posting bail with Target gift cards?
They explained that it was most likely a scam and it indeed was. The Sheriff’s Office was even surprised that two ordinary citizens would try to do what’s right, so this story is making national news.
The scam works when a person calls and lies and says they’re with a federal detention center, or a police office, and that they have a family member in custody. They don’t actually work for the police and they don’t have anybody in custody, but they use that for leverage to convince an unwitting victim to send them money. In this case, they asked for the money to be sent via Target gift cards.
Hanover County Sheriff David R. Hines told reporters, “As law enforcement officers, we can’t be in all places at all times. It warms my heart to see our citizens go above and beyond to help each other, which in turn acts as another set of eyes and ears for the Sheriff’s Office.”
Thank goodness there are people who will step in to help sometimes.
