Landlord passes away and leaves property to elderly tenant who’s lived there for years

Jane Sayner thought she would have to work well into her 80s just to keep a roof over her head. As a cancer survivor living alone, nearly all savings or plans for a “comfortable” future would be set aside entirely for healthcare expenses.

But everything changed when her landlord, John Perrett, passed away.

Sayner had been a long-time renter and was anxious about the future as she wouldn’t be able to afford rent anywhere else if her landlord ever sold her property to another owner or worse, passed away. However, Perrett had always insisted that all of his money and properties would go to charity at the time of his death. Little did Sayner know she was included among those beneficiaries.

Perrett was a great landlord and had always been attentive to his tenants. He would send people right away if anything was broken or needed fixing and would drop by his properties once a month to collect rent in person. Perrett and Sayner would often talk for an hour or so when he came to collect the rent. They would discuss their families, careers, and anything and everything under the sun.

When Perrett passed away, he left behind $18 million to a hospital, money to staff who worked with him through the years, and a home of her own to Sayner.
