Valentin Gruener rescued Sirga the lioness when she was just a cub. Sirga’s parents were captured for eating livestock, and she was born in captivity while her parents were held in the camp.
Sirga’s siblings were killed by other lions in the camp, leaving her alone. Sadly, her mother refused to feed her, but luckily Gruener rescued her and became her caregiver.
Since that time, the pair have formed an inseparable bond.
Today, Sirga is a fully grown lioness, but she’s never stopped caring for her savior.
In the video below, Sirga is seen waiting behind a steel fence for Gruener. When he opens the gate, she comes out to greet him with a big embrace. You can even hear her affectionate vocalizations!
Despite their size and power, African lions are threatened by habitat loss and poaching. Sirga is an exceptional case due to the impact Gruener had on her. In general, it’s not safe to get up close with a big carnivore.
