After years of waiting, the classic Volkswagen bus is back and with some incredible upgrades.
Meet the VW I.D. Buzz, a concept car that made it’s debut earlier this year. More than just a modern version of the old classic, the new Buzz can transform into a driverless vehicle. While in autonomous mode, the front seats can swivel around to face the rear passengers and the steering wheel folds into the dashboard.
Passenger seats can be positioned almost anywhere inside the cabin along sets of sliding rails recessed into the floor. There’s also a special console between them with a large display screen that can be easily stowed when not in use.
If you’re in for a long ride and one of your passengers would like to take a nap, the special sliding headrests can extend out to keep sleepy heads from knocking against the window.
It’s even got a new twist on the classic VW kitsch like the potted plant included in the new VW Bug. Each Buzz comes with a little figurine like this Buddha gnome that hovers magnetically over the dashboard.
While the final version isn’t ready yet, VW executives are excited about the project. “The I.D. Buzz is a highly emotional product,” said Volkswagen’s North America Regional CEO Hinrich Woebcken during a press conference at the Geneva Motor Show. “In the past the business economics did not make sense, but electrification opens up a great horizon for the engineers. The business economics now, sharing parts with other vehicles on the platform, makes it easier to get it done.”
