Fans of the beloved film 9 to 5 were thrilled to learn that Dolly Parton and the entire original cast will be returning for a sequel.
The sequel, still in development, was announced earlier this year when Rashida Jones and Pat Rosnick joined 20th Century Fox to write a new script. “Right now, Dolly, Lily and I are all intending to be in it,” Jane Fonda confirmed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. “My role is as an executive producer, and I’m working with the writers, with Lily, and talking to the writers.”
“I’m sorry to say the situation is worse today,” Fonda said about the fate of our three favorite secretaries who planned to get revenge on their devious, incompetent, and sexist boss. “Today a lot of the work force is hired by an outside company. Who do you talk to if you have a problem?”
Fonda couldn’t provide too many details, but she implied that modern technology and corporate monitoring would be obstacles the girls of Consolidated Companies will be forced to reckon with.
The original film remains one of the highest grossing comedies of all time. In 2009 it was converted into a Tony-nominated Broadway musical featuring a score by Dolly. All three actresses have remained good friends for nearly 40 years. Lily and Jane are currently the stars of a popular Netflix comedy, Grace and Frankie.
