Lisa Harrison Williams works in a nail salon. One day a walk-in customer came in with a strange request. The customer had a dark line running the length of her fingernail that just wouldn’t go away and she asked Williams for help finding a polish that would cover it up.
Williams took one look at the woman’s nail and alarms started going off in her head. The black line was probably cancer.
Not wanting to scare the customer, Williams suggested there might me something medically wrong and asked the woman to see her doctor. The customer was shocked, but agreed and left the salon.
A few days later she called to thank Williams for her insight. Sadly, the line was Subungual Melanoma, a cancer that can create pigment changes in the nail bed. Subungual Melanoma is a rare but dangerous form of cancer with a high risk of metastasis. It usually requires surgical removal of the cancerous tissue.
The customer had no idea and wouldn’t have seen a doctor about the currently painless condition if Williams hadn’t recognized it.
With the customer’s consent, Williams went on social media to share a photo of the dark line to help raise awareness for this condition.
