Sir Roger Moore, star of James Bond, has died today at the age of 89.
Roger Moore portrayed the iconic character 007 in several Bond films. His family confirmed the news saying he passed away after “a short but brave battle with cancer.”
Sir Roger passed away in Switzerland, and according to his wishes, will have a private funeral in Monaco.
The family’s statement on Twitter reads in part:
It is with a heavy heart that we must announce our loving father, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away today in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer. The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone.
We know our love and admiration will be magnified many times over, across the world, by people who knew him for his films, his television shows and his passionate work for UNICEF which he considered to be his greatest achievement.
Sir Roger, originally born in London, was in the Royal Army Service Corps where he served as a second lieutenant. He worked as a model before landing more notable television roles before breaking out into film. Sir Roger is also an author and worked as a Unicef Ambassador for a period.
