Jessica Penoyer opened her door one evening to find Salvatore, her 5-year-old neighbor, standing on her stoop, looking for help.
She asked him what was wrong, but couldn’t quite understand him and thought he said something about a pet dog dying. Jessica then noticed something in Salvatore’s arms.
“He’s standing there and he’s holding something and I thought it was a doll,” Jessica said in an interview with Arizona’s ABC15. She looked closer and realized Sal was holding his 5-month-old sister, bundled in blankets. Sal repeated himself more clearly, “My Mom died in the shower. Can you take care of us?”
Jessica’s heart skipped a beat and she immediately called 911.
Sal’s mother Kaitlyn got into the shower earlier that evening after putting the kids to bed. Little Sal was still awake in his bed and heard a loud ‘thud’ from the bathroom. He went to investigate and found his mother unconscious.
Unable to help, he grabbed his baby sister and ran next door. The little boy didn’t know it, but his mom was hurt, but alive, and his quick thinking likely saved her life.
Jessica ran next door and found Kaitlyn in the shower with the water still running. Emergency services arrived moments later and were able to save her life. The mom of two had suffered a seizure before falling unconscious. She went on to make a full recovery in the hospital.
